Short bio

Barış Kaplan is a PhD candidate under Prof. Dr Grażyna Baranowska, Chair of
Migration Law and Human Rights. He graduated from Dokuz Eylül University
Faculty of Law with high honours and holds an LL.M. in Public Law from
Istanbul University. His LL.M. thesis, entitled “Administrative Detention
of Vulnerable Asylum Seekers under International Law”, examined the
international legal standards governing the detention of asylum seekers in
situations of vulnerability. Before starting his doctoral studies, he
gained professional experience at a leading law firm in Türkiye and
subsequently worked as an independent lawyer.

Barış Kaplan’s research lies at the intersection of international human
rights law, refugee and migration law, and children’s rights. His PhD
project focuses on the integration of refugee children under international
law. It examines the legal meaning of integration and the nature and scope
of states’ corresponding obligations towards refugee children.
