In August 2025, the new anthology “Enforced Disappearances: On Universal Responses to a Worldwide Phenomenon” (Cambridge University Press, 2025) was published. It was edited by Prof. Dr. Grażyna Baranowska and Dr. Milica Kolaković-Bojović.
The publication examines enforced disappearances as a global human rights phenomenon and addresses current challenges in this field. It discusses the responses of UN human rights mechanisms—treaty bodies and special procedures—to issues of accountability and reparations, the rights of relatives, the role of non-state actors and migration-related aspects.
The anthology includes contributions from experts in academia and practice who work within a wide range of legal systems worldwide. It presents and analyzes regional case studies from Latin America, Africa, Mexico, the Western Balkans and the Asia-Pacific region, thereby illustrating these issues within national and regional contexts.
FAU CHREN members Dr. Rainer Huhle (also a member of the Nuremberg Human Rights Center (NMRZ)) and Dr. Lene Guercke (Change! Fellow and head of a research group at the Chair of Human Rights Policy) also contributed as authors.
On 10th February 2026, the Hertie School Centre for Fundamental Rights hosted a public book presentation, with Grażyna Baranowska and Lene Guercke also participating and adding remarks.
Furthermore, on 25th February, another presentation of the anthology took place, hosted by the TexasLaw Latin America Initiative in cooperation with the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS) and the Audre Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice.
A presentation of the work is planned in Erlangen on 22nd June.
